The island of Maio, situated south of the island of Boavista and about 25km east of the island of Santiago, is volcanic in origin. It is quite small, its surface is 268 km2 with a population of  around 5,000 inhabitants. The island is about 24km long from North to South and 16km wide. The island is very flat and the climate is very dry. Nevertheless the island has the biggest forest park in Cape Verde; it has been heavily reafforested mainly with acacia trees. There are saltpans in the southwest and in the northwest and very beautiful beaches of fine golden sand along the coast. The island’s capital is Vila do Maio, also known as Porto Ingles.

HISTORY

After its first sighting on May 1st, 1460, Maio was mainly a grazing ground for cattle and goats until the end of the 16th century, when the English discovered Maio's abundant resource, salt. They took over the salt production because the Portuguese never showed much interest in the island. Maio prospered around salt collecting until the 19th century when the main market for salt turned to Brazil, the business ceased completely when Brazil imposed protective tariffs at the end of the same century.

The island also suffered sackings in 1818 and in 1827 and in the last hundred years, repeated droughts have resulted in emigration.
